Tenant heard a ‘small explosion’ as fire crews tackle blaze in Newark

Fire crews from Nottingham and Lincolnshire are fighting a blaze that broke out in a residential block of flats.

A top floor flat at Tithe Barn Court, North Gate, Newark, caught fire and crews were called to the incident at 12.15pm.

Notts firefighters from Newark, Retford, Carlton, Arnold and London Road were joined on the scene by two crews from Lincolnshire.

John Franks, a member of the Lovers Lane Tenants’ and Residents’ Association said: “The fire started in a cavity wall of one of the top floor flats.

“The tenant smelt smoke and she heard a small explosion.

“The fire services were called and everyone living in the surrounding flats has been evacuated.”

Notts Fire and Rescue Service reported on their Facebook page that upon arrival, fire crews rescued one dog and led seven people to safety.

Group Manager Bryn Coleman attended the scene and said: “As well as having crews tackling the fire from inside the building, we also have our Aerial Ladder Platform on scene which is being used to access the fire from above.

“This is quite a challenging incident due to the fire being between the walls, however firefighting is continuing at present and we now believe that we’ve contained the fire to one side of the building.”
