Update: Trams running back to normal after passengers say delays caused ‘mayhem’

A tram in Nottingham.

The tram network is running back to normal after delays to the service this morning for the second time in 24 hours which passengers described as ‘mayhem’.

At around 8am this morning (July 4), problems were reported of a tram on the line towards Hucknall.

Power loss between Wilkinson Street and Nottingham Station led to delays of up to 30 minutes.

And some trams were ‘held’ on the tram lines due to the power failure; there were four trams back-to-back at the Nottingham Trent University stop.

It came after a tram broke down yesterday (July 3) between Wilkinson Street and The Forest and there were no trams running in that direction for more than an hour.

A passenger, who did not wish to be named, said she was delayed yesterday for 20 minutes on her way to work, where she gets off at The Forest tram stop.

She said she today got on the tram at Toton Lane at 9.30am to go to work and needed to get off at The Forest.

But she was held at the Nottingham Trent stop for 40 minutes.

Four trams were ‘held’ at the Nottingham Trent tram stop.

She said: “I got on it at 9.30am and it’s now 10.10am. I was supposed to start work at 10am. It’s not good because it’s happening too often, it’s like very week. There was a break down in Basford yesterday (July 3) and I was delayed for 20 minutes.

“It’s a regular thing. It’s been twice this week, it’s only Tuesday. And then a couple of months ago it happened and I had to get off right down at Castle Marina and catch a bus into town.”

Jordan Taylor, 20, from Bulwell, was stuck at the university stop on his way to college.

He was supposed to be there at 9am and was more than an hour late.

He said: “There’s breakdowns, delays, there’s just so many problems with them and it makes you so late for where you’re supposed to be.

“If you’ve got work, you’re going to be late. Some bosses don’t believe what you say and it causes mayhem for people trying get to locations.

“I have to get up at 7.30am and be there for 9am sometimes. If there are tram problems I don’t get there until 10am. That’s an hour off my lesson time I’m missing, study work and things I need to know for exams, there’s so many delays.”

NET tweeted around 10am to say: “We currently have no service between Wilkinson Street and Nottingham Station due to a power failure.”

And two shuttle busses have been organised by the company between Wilkinson Street and Nottingham Station.

NET tweeted at 10.20am to say passengers could expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

A NET spokesman said: “Due to a technical fault one of our trams stopped at Shipstone Street this morning causing some delays to services.

“The tram has returned to the depot and services across the network are now returning to normal. We apologise for any inconvenience to customers.”
