Two dead after ‘wrong way’ crash on M1 in Leicestershire

An 87-year-old driver and a 27-year old passenger have died in a crash involving a vehicle said to be going the wrong way down the M1 motorway.

The crash between a blue Mazda Premacy and a white Ford transit van happened at around 2am near junction 24 on the M1 Southbound carriageway.

Leicestershire Police say they received reports of a vehicle travelling the wrong way down the southbound carriageway of the M1 prior to the collision.

The 87-year-old driver of the Mazda and a passenger in the van died at the scene.

The driver of the van was taken to the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham where he’s in a stable condition.

The southbound carriageway was closed all day and one lane of the northbound carriageway between junctions 24 and 25 was shut until the afternoon.

Anyone who has information about the incident is asked to call police on 101 quoting incident 23 of 12 October 2015.
