More than 17,000 rural homes and businesses across Nottinghamshire will benefit from superfast broadband in a plan to boost internet speeds by 2018.

Areas in Bassetlaw, Newark and Sherwood will see the majority of improvements, with a total of 130 towns and villages benefiting from the latest stage of a £20m upgrade.

The scheme involving BT and Nottinghamshire County Council has already brought high speed internet to over 50,000 local addresses since June 2014.

And the programme is expected to be complete in Spring 2018 – by which time a total of 80,000 homes will have been connected.

It has been targeting rural communities to provide fibre broadband in areas where it has previously been unavailable.

Councillor Diana Meale, chair of Economic Development the council said: “This is one of the largest and most ambitious infrastructure projects ever delivered in the county.”

Fibre broadband allows users faster download and upload speeds as well as faster connections when using multiple devices.

USwitch recently named Coningsby Gardens East in Woodthorpe as one of the top 20 areas for slowest internet speeds in the UK.

The road had a download speed of 1.03 megabytes per second, compared to the national average of 14.7 megabytes.
