More speed cameras are going up along a mile long stretch of road in Nottinghamshire and more could be installed.

Average speed cameras will cover 1.4 miles of the A60 between Woodthorpe Drive and Oxclose Lane.

Nottinghamshire County Council have deemed the area a hotspot after 60 crashes resulted in 86 injuries in four years and have not ruled out putting more up in the future.

If the need warrants it we will put speed cameras in

Chairman of the transport and highways committee Councillor Kevin Greaves said: “We are committed to road safety and where possible we will install speed cameras; if the need warrants it we will put them in.

“There are other areas around the county that I believe could do with average speed cameras installing as they have been a great success like with the A614.

“There have been zero speed related accidents since they were put in on that road.”

Councillor Greaves believes that average speed cameras are more effective at slowing down traffic over static cameras.

He said: “The static ones are OK but as soon as motorists are through the trap, they speed up and are off again and the average speed cameras stop that.

“They have drastically reduced the amount of accidents in the county.

“We have put in place the restrictions on the A60 that need addressing making the area safer for traffic moving through that area.”

Most traffic does the limit anyway

Road users have been speaking to Notts TV about their thoughts on the new cameras.

Neil Park, 42, from Mansfield said: “It is probably safer but from my experience of travelling this road, most traffic does the speed limit on here anyway.”

Nora Emmersfield, from Arnold, said: “I think they will slow traffic down and it’s a good thing to have with all the turn-ins around here.”
