Archaeologists start dig at Nottingham Castle

An area of Nottingham Castle is being dug up by archaeologists in a bid to find out more about medieval life.

The team of experts began the month long project in an attempt to find more evidence of 19th Century gardens and buildings.

The team of archaeologists want to learn more about what the area was like before it was a museum and to see how people were living within that space.

Paul Johnson, a Project Manager at Trent & Peak Archaeology, said: “I was told there was 12th and 13th Century material coming out so we know that there’s 12th and 13th century activity on the site.”

This particular area of the castle has never been studied before.

The dig will give volunteers the opportunity to work alongside professionals in the search for historical objects dating back as far as the middle ages.

Even though the dig only started recently, the team has already discovered several items that are being sent off to be analysed. Archaeologists hope that the deeper they dig the more they will find.
