A church volunteer has been found guilty of indecently assaulting a teenage boy in Nottinghamshire more than 30 years ago.

Colin Crogan, aged 56, targeted his victim, who was then in his early teens, at his home in West Bridgford in 1983.

He first befriended the boy at a church-run youth club in Nottingham, where Crogan was a volunteer.

The boy was invited to stay over at Crogan’s home, and woke to find him indecently assaulting him.

His victim came forward to Notts Police in 2014 and Crogan was arrested in February 2015.

He denied the charges and faced a three-day trial at Nottingham Crown Court, where on Friday, August 19, he was found guilty of two charges of indecent assault on a boy aged under 16.

He was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for each offence, to run concurrently. He will also sign the sex offenders register for 10 years.

The case was investigated by detectives from Operation Equinox, Notts Police’s historical abuse unit.

Detective Superintendent Adrian Pearson, who heads the operation, said: “Crogan used his position as a volunteer at a youth club to befriend and sexually exploit a young boy, who had been attending.

“It was a calculated attempt to win his victim’s trust to satisfy his own sexual desires. It was testament to the bravery of the victim that he was prepared to come forward even after this length of time in order that Crogan should face justice for these historical crimes.”
