DH Lawrence Heritage Centre could be saved by arts grant

LISTEN: Matt Turpin of Nottingham City of Literature on why centre’s survival is vital

Eastwood’s DH Lawrence Heritage centre could be saved by a grant from Arts Council England.

The centre was on the brink of closure after Broxtowe Borough Council announced that it could no longer afford to keep it open.

However Arts Council England has said it will pay for a £20,00 study to look at the future of the centre and new strategies which could keep it open.

We shouldn’t be closing things down

Nottingham City of Literature communications manager Matt Turpin says the news is a relief but said work still needs to be done.

He said: “It does need change, it was definitely not in the best state it could be but as we have become the City of Literature, we shouldn’t be closing things down, we should be making them better.

“This money has given a lifeline to hopefully see how it can continue running into the future and how it can continue to be a great educational tool.

“Everyone I speak to who I mention this to thinks it’s a great shame who are shocked by the threat really, and these are people not just in Nottingham but outside as well.”
