Crews from Bingham and West Bridgford tackled the fire

A massive hay bale fire which started at a Nottinghamshire farm on Wednesday morning is still burning more than 24 hours later.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to a field at Tithby, near Bingham, at 4.30am on Wednesday, when the 1,200-tonne stack went up in flames.

Although crews from Bingham quickly managed to control the fire, it has carried on burning and was still smouldering on Thursday morning.

It has now been handed back to the farmer, for a ‘controlled burn’ process while the last of the flames die down.

A spokesman for Notts Fire and Rescue Service said: “It’s proved difficult to extinguish and the farmer assisted the team by moving bales to create a fire break in order to reduce the size of the stack and the potential fuel for the fire.

“The cause is currently unknown but resources from across the county worked hard to try and get the fire out.”
