Homeless protesters stay put despite eviction notice

second homeless protest camp in Notts

Protesters who have set up a camp on a patch of grass near the Broadmarsh Centre have not moved, despite being served with an eviction notice.

Nottingham City Council served the notice of intent to evict the protesters from the site by 8am on Thursday, January 7.

The campaigners have been at the site since New Year’s Day after moving from their previous camp on Station Street.

Despite the notice, tents were still pitched on the site this morning with no indication of them leaving.

The Cliff Road site is the second camp protesters have set up and has been on-going since Christmas Eve.

Nottingham City Council are now seeking a court order to remove the campaigners from the site.

Video: Alec Cohen from Fightback Nottingham says they are going to address complaints from residents.

The Left Wing group ‘Fightback’, who are controlling the site want the council to open up empty buildings for homeless people over the winter.

One of the campaigners has said that they will play ‘Cat and Mouse’ with the council until the their demands are met.

Residents living in the area have complained about the mess, noise and public urination at the site.

Nottingham City Council have sent community protection officers to homes near the site and stated that there were 14 complaints from 22 responses.

A spokesperson for the council said: “We’re pleased the tents have now been removed from Station Street without the need for enforcement action and further cost to taxpayers.

“We hope that the protesters will now also heed the notice served on them today at Cliff Road and vacate the the site so it can return to public use and the residents can be left in peace.”
