REPLAY: Royal London One Day Cup clash between Nottinghamshire Outlaws and Warwickshire Bears

Notts TV covered the clash at Trent Bridge between Nottinghamshire Outlaws and the Warwickshire Bears in the Royal London One Day Cup as part of cricket week live on the website on Wednesday June 8.

Both teams were looking to kick on in the competition with Notts having won their thrilling opening match against Northants by 20 runs. Here’s how the action unfolded on our live blog with Jake Brigstock.

21:36 – ANALYSIS A good win for the Outlaws who are now unbeaten in their opening two games of the Royal London One Day Cup following their successes against Northamptonshire and now Warwickshire. The game always felt as though Nottinghamshire had the edge on the run rate which only swelled as the game went on. A fantastic knock by Michael Lumb, setting the tone for the Outlaws achieving over 400 runs in a one day innings again with the bowlers then managing to defend it, this time a little more comfortably. 21:27 – RESULT Nottinghamshire Outlaws beat Warwickshire Bears by 36 runs.

21:26 Over 50 Warks 379 all out Mullaney to bowl the final over. Hannon-Dalby plays to short third man for one to get Jones on strike who top edges the next ball for four over short third man! Mullaney responds by clean bowling him next ball!

21:23 Over 49 Warks 374/9 Hannon-Dalby 4 Jones 22 It looks as if Jones wants to bat higher up the order in future, playing a ramp shot wide of fine leg for four! He then hits another to deep mid-wicket for another single. Hannon-Dalby wafts at one outside off which goes straight through to Wessels. He then hits two before netting a single to give the strike back to Jones. That brings the run rate above 36. Jones then hits a lovely shot through mid-wicket for four more.

21:19 Over 48 Warks 362/9 Hannon-Dalby 1 Jones 13 Gurney to bowl his final over. He goes for a single off of Jones before taking the wicket of Patel. Jones then clubs the next ball to deep mid-wicket aerially for a single. Hannon-Dalby’s first ball is dispatched for a single to square leg to get him off the mark. Jones then hits a ball through the covers unintentionally as he aims for the legside but it races away for a boundary as he reaches double figures. A single to finish. Gurney has bowled well today and finishes with figures of 10-58-3.

21:13 Over 47 Warks 354/8 Javid 20 Jones 6 Luke Fletcher returns to the attack. Three singles from the first three balls until Jones hits a lovely lofted shot through mid-wicket for a one bounce four. A single to follow before the last ball is hit for a well run two.

21:09 Over 46 Warks 344/8 Javid 16 Jones 0 Javid hits the opening ball of Gurney’s ninth over for one. Ambrose then hits a four through the covers before being caught at mid-off! Gurney bounces Patel first up. Gurney then clean bowls Patel as he looks to slog through the legside. Wonderful delivery! Richard Jones steps in to face and Gurney oversteps with the batsmen running a leg bye. We have a free hit! Jones can only hit it for a single to mid off. The Bears need 72 off 24.

21:02 Over 45 Warks 335/6 Javid 14 Ambrose 69 Hutton starts his last over with a full toss that only yields two. Ambrose then hits the ball very hard only for it to take out middle stump at the bowler’s end! Instead of a potential four, only one is scored. A single follows from Javid before Ambrose hits aerially through square leg for four. The over finishes with Ambrose hitting the ball back past the bowler for four. Hutton finishes with figures of 10-0-72-1. An expensive end.

20:57 Over 44 Warks 319/6 Javid 13 Ambrose 54 Gurney returns and his first two balls go for singles followed by a dot. Ambrose then cuts the ball to the man at deep point for a single. A superb bouncer by Gurney ties Javid in knots and he doesn’t know what to do with it before hitting to point to end the over with a single. Just four from that one. It seems a formality now for the home side.

20:53 Over 43 Warks 314/6 Javid 10 Ambrose 52 Hutton’s ninth over is tight enough at this stage, conceding just seven runs. Ambrose gets to a quickfire 50. The 50 partnership for the seventh wicket also comes up off just 25 balls with the penultimate ball. The Bears need 102 runs from 42 balls at a rate of 14.57 per over.

20:49 Over 42 Warks 307/6 Javid 7 Ambrose 48 Ambrose is giving this a go. Javid opens with a single before Ambrose hits a dot looking to hit big. He then cover drives for four runs followed by a six agonisingly just over the head of the fielder at deep mid-wicket. Single to follow before the Bears scamper for two to give Ambrose the strike. Required rate down to 13.63.

20:46 Over 41 Warks 293/6 Javid 4 Ambrose 37 A better over for the Bears as Ambrose kicks on against Samit Patel. He hits two fours, a six and a single in that over as Javid anchors at the other end with two singles. It brings the required rate down to 13.67.

20:42 Over 40 Warks 276/6 Javid 2 Ambrose 22 Mullaney’s first ball is hit to square leg for a single by Javid as Ambrose then returns the favour with a deft touch to short third man. Ambrose then squeezes the ball through the same area for four. Another good shot by Ambrose, this time dissecting deep mid-wicket and long on for a one bounce four. He then nudges a single before Javid does the same. 11 off the over for the Bears but it’s too little too late as the required run rate reaches 14.00.

No sooner has he reached it, he is caught out the very next ball! Rikki Clarke gets off the mark immediately with a single to deep mid-wicket. Ambrose defends the final ball. A terrific over for the Outlaws.

20:30 Over 37 Warks 253/4 Trott 99 Ambrose 8 Brett Hutton returns to the attack. Fabulous shot first up by Trott, hitting the ball wide of long-on for four. He hits the next one to deep square leg for a single. Mullaney then just beats the edge of Ambrose’s bat with a corker. This is followed by a well run two. Mullaney beats the edge of Ambrose yet again with another superb delivery. He then flicks the ball to deep extra cover for one more.

20:25 Over 36 Warks 245/4 Trott 94 Ambrose 5 Trott looks to go aerial again as he picks up one off of Mullaney’s first ball of the 36th over. Ambrose then cuts the ball away in the offside gap for two before hitting a single to mid-on. Trott then hits the ball over mid-on for six and punches the air with delight. A quickly run single to end the over.

A single is scored from the next two before Trott hits just over cover and just short of incoming deep extra cover for two. Trott nets a single to keep the strike. The Bears will really have to kick through the gears if they are to win this match, needing 188 runs from 102 balls.

20:11 Over 32 Warks 221/2 Trott 78 Bell 58 Mullaney continues. The Bears exchanged singles for the first five balls before Bell cashes in with the last delivery of the over, hitting the ball between deep mid-wicket and deep square leg for four. A much needed boundary.

Bell then works the ball down to third man to bring the third wicket partnership of 50 up off of 43 balls. Two runs are then added.

19:47 – ANALYSIS It seems as though the Outlaws are firmly in the ascendency at this stage as Warwickshire need another 254 runs in 25 overs at a run rate of 10.16. However the Bears do have two ex England internationals at the crease. Expect drama in the last quarter of this game.

19:45 Over 25 Warks 162/2 Trott 62 Bell 17 Sam Wood starts the over well, getting three consecutive dots from Ian Bell in the first three balls before being worked away for one through extra cover. Trott then gets a single before Bell works the ball through cover for two. The required rate has rocketed to over 10 now with both teams taking a drink.

19:43 Over 24 Warks 158/2 Trott 61 Bell 14 Bell and Trott are working the ball around well out there but did not pick up a boundary that over. Hutton only conceded four singles in that as the required run rate creeps ever nearer to 10, currently standing at 9.92 with 26 overs still to go.

19:25 Over 19 Warks 124/1 Trott 48 Hain 62 Hain and Trott alternate singles before Hain hits Patel over mid on for four and then off his legs over square leg for six. He’s going for a fair few runs is Samit Patel with his current figures reading 5-0-43-0.

19:21 Over 18 Warks 110/1 Trott 46 Hain 50 Mullaney replaces Hutton. The two batsmen alternate singles before Hain cuts through backward point for four. After a single, Trott is then dropped at deep mid-wicket! Another chance! Hain then completes the over by bringing up his 50 with a single.

19:17 Over 17 Warks 101/1 Trott 44 Hain 43 That drop could prove costly as Hain advances down the wicket and hits Patel over long on for six first ball. He then works the ball to deep mid-wicket for a single. Trott plays to the covers for one. Three more singles complete the over.

19:14 Over 16 Warks 90/1 Trott 42 Hain 35 Hutton continues his spell into his fourth over. Trott works the ball to square leg for a single before a half-hearted LBW appeal is turned down on Hain. He then flashes the bat as the ball beats the edge next delivery. Hain is then dropped! Sam Wood ran from deep square leg to deep mid-wicket and attempted to catch the ball with a dive but dropped him! A very hard chance. Hain then gets a single before two dots. A very good over from Hutton. Required run rate is up to 9.59 with 34 overs to go.

He then rotates the strike with a single to square leg which brings up the 50 partnership for the second wicket. Hutton bowling a lot at the legs here. He keeps Trott to a dot before Trott plays the ball through mid on for four more.

Trott looks to run a single and is nearly half way down the track when Hain sends him back; he manages to slide his bat in comfortably in the end after a poor throw.

Hain runs a quick single before Porterfield latches onto a loose delivery and shoots through extra cover for four. It looks very much as though he is starting to settle in. A dot before Porterfield advances down the wicket and hits the ball over backward square leg for four.

Hain is coping much better with this than Porterfield at the moment with Porterfield earning a single before Hain plays another shot through point for four. Two dots to follow.

A loud LBW appeal second ball but the umpire immediately shakes his head. Porterfield off the mark flicking the ball to mid-wicket. Sam Hain on strike now, the man who hit 92* here in the T20 Blast fixture as Birmingham Bears went on to beat the Outlaws in that game. Appeal for a catch behind for his first ball but the umpire is not interested. He gets off the mark with a thick edge to third man. Gurney bowls a wide before Porterfield nearly edges the final ball. A good start for the Outlaws.

17:47 – ANALYSIS Very good total from the Outlaws with the top order setting the standard which also featured a true captain’s innings. The bowlers will have to perform a lot better than they did against the Northamptonshire Steelbacks to defend this total, which could be difficult with Jake Ball missing and with the Warwickshire Bears’ stellar batting line-up. Certainly not over this one. We will be back shortly as the Bears try and chase down 416 to win.

17:37 Over 50 Notts 415/5 Mullaney 0 Patel 17 Hannon-Dalby to bowl the final over, who bowls a full toss to Christian which he dispatches for six through mid-wicket! The next one goes for six over long on to bring up 400! Christian then gets out in search of his century. Patel skies the next ball for two off of a no ball which brings us the first free hit of the day! Patel comes down the track and hits it over the bowlers head for six! A breathless finale to the innings here at Trent Bridge! Patel advances again and hits over the covers for four more! A single off of the final ball as Notts have set Warwickshire 416 to win.

17:31 Over 49 Notts 388/4 Christian 82 Patel 4 Ateeq Javid to bowl. Deep conversation about the field before he does between himself and the captain. Smith skies a shot just short of long off for one before Christian hits the next ball straight back over the bowlers head for six. He then comes down the pitch to hit a superb shot through mid-wicket for four more. A single to follow. Smith gets out hitting straight to long on! Samit Patel comes in for the final delivery, thinly bottom edges it and the ball creeps away for four! Can Notts reach 400 for the second consecutive game?

17:25 Over 48 Notts 372/3 Christian 71 Smith 72 Hannon-Dalby returns. He gets away with a full toss going for a single to cover before conceding an overthrow! Smith hits another full toss, this time straight onto the ankle of Hannon-Dalby; that one will be sore tomorrow! Still, only a single conceded. Christian hits the last ball over extra cover for six more after what was looking to be a good over for the Bears.

17:21 Over 47 Notts 361/3 Christian 64 Smith 68 Dan Christian moves into the 50s with the first ball of Richard Jones’ eighth over being hit for four. The second ball is played over short third man for four more. He then top edges the third over short third man again for another four! He’s not hanging about now that he has reached the landmark! He hits the fourth between square leg and mid-wicket aerially for four more! Four consecutive fours! He tries the same shot again which bounces just before reaching deep mid-wicket, restricting the captain to a single. Smith plays an improvised reversed sweep for one to third man to keep the strike. 18 from that over.

17:15 Over 46 Notts 343/3 Christian 47 Smith 67 Patel to finish his allotted overs. Four singles, a dot and a four to finish, aerially swept through square leg by Smith. That brings up the 100 partnership for the fourth wicket off just 69 balls.

17:11 Over 45 Notts 335/3 Christian 45 Smith 61 Richard Jones returns to the attack for the 45th over. Christian hits a six over the covers in the second ball of the over as the sun returns. It looks as if the ball has been lost as the umpires deliberate on which ball will be the replacement. Jones appeals for an LBW next ball but was sliding down leg stump as the Outlaws scamper through for a single. Smith then produces a ramp shot to hit a four through fine leg. A single and a dot to finish. 13 from that one.

17:05 Over 44 Notts 322/3 Christian 38 Smith 55 Patel concedes two singles before bowling two wides. Smith then hits a six which is caught on the wrong side of the boundary to bring up a 50!

17:01 Over 43 Notts 309/3 Christian 36 Smith 46 The first ball from Hannon-Dalby is lofted over mid-wicket for a one bounce four. A mix up sees a half chance of running Dan Christian out go by as the bowler puts his football skills to the test. Christian responds by perfectly driving a four through the covers as the clouds gather and the sun waves its goodbyes over Trent Bridge. Then next ball, after running two, the fielder throws the ball at the wicketkeeper’s end which comes off the bat of Christian and goes for four overthrows! A single to finish as Notts get 16 from the over.

16:58 Over 42 Notts 293/3 Christian 25 Smith 41 Patel continues. Another largely uneventful over sees five singles as Notts continue to work the ball around the ground. The final single brings up the 50 partnership from 44 balls. Surely it won’t be long before the batsmen start to hit big?

Another superb innings from the 36 year old as the crowd rise to their feet in appreciation of such a talented knock. Brendan Taylor comes in and immediately gets off the mark, cutting a shot through point for four before clean bowling the ex Zimbabwean international! An eventful over comes to an end with a dot by captain Dan Christian. Game on!

He then replicates the same lofted shot over mid-wicket with the same result; six more! Four singles to end the expensive over of 12.

16:15 Over 33 Notts 222/1 Lumb 119 Smith 18 Rikki Clarke back into the attack. The Bears have an obvious game plan with three men outside of the ring to both batsmen on the legside. Tiring for the fielders however with the left and right hand combination of the batsmen at the crease. Almost predictably, that’s six singles off of the over. The field setting is giving the impression that the Bears are happy to concede six runs an over at this stage.

He then repeats with the next ball; he’s looking in really good nick out there. The Outlaws continue to then rotate the strike. An expensive over with 12 coming off it.

16:02 Over 30 Notts 194/1 Lumb 103 Smith 6 Two more valuable singles off the first two for Notts as Trott returns. Lumb looks to give himself more room by moving wide of the crease to try and hit a ball over the offside but misses completely. Another couple of singles follow.

Jones looks fired up now as he causes Smith some problems with the short ball after three singles. Just what the Bears needed.

15:45 Over 26 Notts 178/0 Lumb 94 Wessels 76 The action returns, Trott returns with his medium pace and the Outlaws openers return with their capable rotation of the strike. The Bears will be hoping that drinks bring wickets sooner rather than later as Lumb edges ever closer to his century.

Good attacking batting from the home side as the opening partnership continues to grow considerably once again.

The 35 year old ex England international concedes a single off of the first ball courtesy of Wessels which brings up 150 for both Notts and the opening partnership off of 130 balls. The Bears are desperately searching for a breakthrough but the Outlaws remain composed with a further three singles before Trott tightens the over up, finishing with two dots.

15:19 Over 20 Notts 143/0 Lumb 76 Wessels 59 Laurie Evans replaces Jeetan Patel for the twentieth over. Wessels shows off the first fancy shot of the day with a reverse sweep but results in a dot. He goes back to more conventional methods for the next one and ends up hitting a six over mid-wicket. Evans is struggling with his line and length as he bowls a wide and gets cut away through point for two more. An expensive opening over as Lumb ends it with a single.

15:14 Over 19 Notts 131/0 Lumb 72 Wessels 52 Right on cue with the first ball of the over from Javid, Wessels brings up his 50. The openers are continuing to rotate the strike to good effect with some good running also seeing two picked up from the fifth ball of the over for Wessels. A dot to finish as Javid keeps his economy rate under six with current figures of 5-0-27-0.

15:10 Over 18 Notts 127/0 Lumb 71 Wessels 49 Lumb is really targeting Patel in the glorious sunshine which brings Bell and Patel together to re-assess the field after the first ball of the over which works out well for the Bears. Wessels is still in the forties! Surely not for much longer…

He then hits the fourth ball with a lofted shot through midwicket for another four. Lumb then brings up his fifty with a shot through point for one. Jones is proving to be quite expensive here with current figures of 3-0-30-0.

Two runs by Wessels through backward point to finish. Expensive over with 15 coming off it.

A quiet end to the over follows as both batsmen continue to rotate the strike. The run rate is now up to 5.50.

After a good start, Hannon-Dalby veers off his line and length just enough for Lumb to dispatch the 26 year old expertly through the covers for four. 14:23 Over 7 Notts 33/0 Lumb 18 Wessels 14 Lumb hits the first ball for four before Clarke quickly gets back to the line and length that restricted Wessels to six dots in his previous over. Another good over from the 34 year old.

Immediately after, Wessels plays a lovely cover drive to dissect the field and earn a boundary. Wessels hits the last ball of the over on the back foot through extra cover for four more. It looks as if Patel is the man being targeted.
