Nottinghamshire golf course left devastated by moterbikes

Motorbikes at Hollinwell Golf Course destroyed the green

Hollinwell Golf Club has suffered thousands of pounds worth of damage to its fairway after motorbikes destroyed part of its green.

It is believed that the bikes entered the Hollinwell Golf Course on Sunday afternoon.

Golf Course Manager, Phil Stain said the course – one of the top 100 in England – has had issues with bikes for several years but the damage has never been as severe.

He said: “First day back after the Christmas holidays it was a complete shock. This is really serious damage, we are one of the top golf courses in the country and obviously something like this is quite devastating to our reputation.

“As a top championship golf course we have to maintain standards and you can imagine that a lot of people pay a lot of money to play on these golf greens”.

Plans are now being put in place to re grass the area that was damaged but it could cost several thousands of pounds.

Captain Stewart England, is shocked at what has happened and says that the damage they created in a few minutes will take several months to repair.

“We’re very keen to try and stop this happening again and will be offering a substantial reward to anyone with any information.”

Nottinghamshire Police Inspector, Glenn Longden said: “The problem with off road motorcycles is one I take very seriously and one that plagues many open spaces across the area.

“Wherever possible Nottinghamshire Police will bring those responsible to justice, however at present our ability to combat this issue relies on specialist resources whose avilability is very limited.

“I am hopeful of securing funding to recruit and train local officers to carry out this function and I will be making this a priority in 2016.”
