National Watersports Centre closes following oil spill

An investigation is being carried out following an oil spill which caused part of Holme Pierrepont to be shut down temporarily.

Holme Pierrepont’s white water course was closed overnight but was reopened this morning.

The Environmental Agency suspect that the oil spillage came from a boat, but will continue to carry out their investigation.

The oil spill has made no impact on wildlife or the local environment.

Brian Taylor, Chair of Holme Pierrepont Leisure Trust, said “Our White Water Course is fed directly from the River Trent, so when oil was spotted on the river yesterday afternoon we temporarily closed the slalom course as a precautionary measure and quickly reported the spillage to the Environment Agency.

“The Environment Agency were unable to locate the source of the leak and, after further checks by our own staff, we reopened the course this morning.”

“We are continuing to closely monitor both the river and the course, as well as supporting the Environment Agency with their ongoing investigations.”

Sophie Cox, Communications Specialist from the Environmental Agency, said: “We are grateful to the Watersports Centre for quickly reporting this incident, as if the spill had been more serious an early response and the use of containment booms can be the difference between minor or major environmental damage.”
