Nottingham Rugby have appointed Ian Costello as the club’s new head coach.

The Irishman joins the Green and Whites from PRO12 side Munster, on a two-year deal. Costello has spent the last two seasons at the provincial giants as assistant coach, with responsibility for defence and kicking.

Costello attended Nottingham’s last match of the season on Saturday, against Cornish Pirates.

He said: “I’m delighted to be joining Nottingham and from what I witnessed on Saturday, I think we have a fantastic opportunity next season.

“The club already has a really strong set-up, with a great team of people both on and off the field. I hope to be able to build on that, and working with the coaching and support team already in place, I’m sure we can continue to compete in what is a very tough Championship.”

Born in Dingle, County Kerry, Costello grew up in Limerick and went onto complete a degree in sport science at the University of Limerick. He has been credited for aiding the skill development of a number of Munster’s current rising stars.

A former centre and outside half, Costello has been working with the Munster Rugby squad since 2010, holding roles at Under-20, A and Academy level, before assuming the role of Munster A head coach in 2011 where he led the side to a British and Irish Cup title.

Director of rugby at Nottingham, Simon Beatham said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that Ian has agreed to come and join us here at The Bay. His coaching experience and pedigree is highly thought of and we know we’ve picked the right man for the job.

“He came through what was a very tough selection and interview process, with a number of other excellent candidates up for the role. We feel Ian is a perfect fit for us, with our emphasis on nurturing young talent and putting players on that developmental pathway, as well as leading the next phase for Nottingham Rugby in the Championship.

“We’re very excited about what Ian can bring to this club and feel he can help us continue to grow and develop, both on and off the field. Everyone we’ve spoken to has told us what a fantastic individual and coach he is, and we can’t wait to start what we hope will be an exciting new era for Nottingham.”

The Green and Whites will now continue their preparations for their 140th season, with final player signings for next season expected within the next week.
