The top 10 baby names, most popular books and school meals among others have been released by a local authority.

Nottinghamshire County Council has unveiled its annual list of facts and top 10s for 2017.

Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council Kay Cutts said: “Although many of the services we provide are often taken for granted, they play an invaluable role in the daily lives of everyone, young and old.

“I am proud of the role we play in keeping Nottinghamshire moving each and every day.

“For me personally, 2017 has been a momentous year.

“In May I was elected to the County Council and subsequently chosen as Leader by my peers – a role which I feel extremely proud and privileged to hold.”

Cllr Cutts paid tribute to the retiring chairman of the County Council.

She said: “I’d like to pay tribute to the retiring chairman, councillor Yvonne Woodhead and the current chairman, Councillor John Handley who have been splendid ambassadors for both the county and the County Council.

“They have met hundreds of people of all ages and from all different backgrounds over the last 12 months, not forgetting the recent visit of Prince Harry and Meghan on the first public appearance following their engagement.”

Cllr Cutts also paid homage to Nottinghamshire sport.

She said: “The performances of Elise Christie (speed skating) and Ellie Downie (gymnastics) earned them BBC Sports Personality of the Year nominations and Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club secured an historic treble of one day and T20 cups  and County Championship promotion.

“We were proud to host a full stage of the Tour of Britain cycle race for the first time in September – an unforgettable day which showed off Nottinghamshire at its best.

Cllr Cutts said there’s ‘plenty to look forward to in 2018’.

She said: “There will be numerous events around the county to mark 100 years since the end of the Great War.

“Preparations will step up apace for the arrival of HS2, which will make our hub at Toton the best connected station on the entire HS2 network and we anticipate further jobs, investment and other benefits to flow from our evolving relationship with the Zhijiang Province in China.”
