The charity running Green’s Windmill in Sneinton has won the highest award a volunteer group can get in the UK.

The trust which oversees the day-to-day work of a 19th century windmill in Sneinton, has received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for 2017.

The award was created by The Queen in 2002 to mark her Golden Jubilee and is described as ‘the MBE for volunteer groups’ by the trust.

Trustees, staff and volunteers raised £440 for the Green’s Windmill Trust through a badged ale.

Green’s Windmill Trust heritage officer Jamie Duff said: “Receiving the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service represents a wonderful achievement for the organisation.

“The Trustees and volunteers feel immensely proud to receive such a prestigious accolade and the Trust has steadily been improving its impact since its inception in 2012

“Receiving the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service will help it sustain the momentum it needs to ensure this historic landmark, so familiar on Nottingham’s skyline, remains open, operating and continues to flourish.”

Green’s Windmill is now mostly run by volunteers who help to keep it open and in working condition.

Jamie said: “Green’s Windmill volunteers not only continue to meet the charities objectives and purposes but also help to formulate a longer term plan to realise the future ambitions of the charity and secure its future.

“Collectively, they have built a positive reputation for their enthusiastic approach, hard work and friendly demeanour, which has increased their impact in all aspects of the charities cause, mission and values.

“Without them, this would not be possible, so I would like to take this opportunity to say a big ‘thank you’ to all our volunteers for their tireless effort and dedication.”
