Notts politicians react as UKIP leadership candidate hospitalised after ‘altercation’

Nottinghamshire representatives have been reacting to UKIP leadership candidate Steven Woolfe being hospitalised after an ‘altercation.’

An ‘altercation’ is reported to have happened during a meeting of UKIP MEPs in Strasbourg which left Mr Woolfe in a ‘serious condition’ on his 49th birthday.

Nigel Farage has been quoted as saying that Mr Woolfe “is now conscious and talking in hospital.”

Mr Woolfe was taken ill after walking out on a vote at the European Parliament.

This comes just one day after Mr Woolfe put himself forward to be the next UKIP leader with Diane James resigning.

Apparently he has been hit, fallen over and then banged his head

UKIP Nottinghamshire county chairman Fran Loi said: “It’s unbelievable what’s happened, my thoughts are with Stephen Woolfe and his family at the moment.

“I know him personally, he’s a top guy and I’m really concerned about him.

“Apparently he has been hit, fallen over and then banged his head and was then treated by medics on the scene before being transferred to hospital.”

East Midlands’ MEP Glenis Willmott Tweeted that she wishes Mr Woolfe ‘a full and speedy recovery’ and that ‘violence has no place in politics.’
