Council bosses agreed a village pub can serve alcohol outdoors for longer despite concerns from some neighbours over noise.

The Griffins Head on Moor Road, Papplewick, can now hold public events until 10pm on land behind the pub on certain dates.

Landlady Nicola Lee asked Gedling Borough Council for permission for the change.

It was granted at a council licensing committee meeting held on March 18, when committee chair Councillor Alison Hunt (Lab) said: “We are minded to grant the application subject to all the conditions enclosed within the papers including the offer of only extending the time until 10pm Fridays and Saturdays and on Sundays that precede a bank holiday.”

The new hours apply to all Fridays and Saturdays. They also apply to any Sunday before a bank holiday.

Other conditions include a limit on the number of events each year and on how many people could attend.

The pub previously had to stop all outdoor events at 9pm.

Neighbours Wendy Eyre and Matthew Done raised an objection to the longer opening hours.

They feared a bar might be set up close to their fence and loud generators run to provide power.

The pair were also concerned subsequent landlords might use the space to hold more events than Ms Lee had planned.

Meeting documents detailed how the council had received complaints about noise from the pub when it was under different management.

In the March 18 meeting Ms Eyre said: “This seems so reliant on the goodwill and the community-mindedness of Nicola and team.

“Over the period of time we’ve lived there we’ve had the good, the bad and the ugly side.

“It caused us a lot of distress and problems that we’ve tried to deal with you know by talking to the previous management team, it got really out of hand.

“If Nicola isn’t around next year, then who knows what happens next.”

The events taking place on the field at the back of the pub are family-friendly ones such as Griff Fest which is a tribute festival day showcasing the music of the likes of Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and Oasis.

When contacted about her neighbours’ concerns landlady Ms Lee told Notts TV: “At the minute the only plan we have got is Griff Fest and that’s the May 26 and as I say we had one objection for that.

“Genuinely had we had 30, 40, 50 or 60 complaints from the neighbours I would have shoved it, this is too much of a community-hub to be upsetting the community.

“It’s supporting the village and it’s worth it for a day.”
