Polls open as Nottinghamshire County Council elections take place today

Nottinghamshire County Hall, where the council is based.

The Nottinghamshire County Council elections take place today with 264 candidates running for 66 seats.

The 66 seats make up 56 areas of the county, called divisions; ten divisions will be represented by two councillors.

The other 46 will be represented by one councillor and the number of councillors depends on the size and population of the areas.

The polls are open from 7am until 10pm today (Thursday May 4) with the results announced on Friday (May 5).

The elections take place every four years and in 2013, Labour secured 34 seats, the Conservatives 21, the Liberal Democrats 8 and the Independent Group three.

There was one non-aligned independent member.

It will be the first election since the last Local Government Boundary Commission revisions.

The 66 councillors being returned is one fewer than the current composition of the council – but the leaders of the major parties will still need 34 members to take overall charge at County Hall, in West Bridgford.

Votes can be cast in person at a polling station, by post or proxy, when someone can vote on your behalf.
