It’s been a staple in Nottingham for 80 years – and 2016 is shaping up to be its toughest year yet if the pictures are anything to go by.

The Nottingham City Homes annual best garden competition sees green-fingered tenants vying for an array of prizes in different categories.

And we’ve been out and about with judges as they look at five gardens bidding to win the Special Cup part of the competition.

The winner will be announced at the end of the month – along with pictures of all the entrants.

Wenda Leslie from Nottingham City Homes said: “We look at the arrangement of the garden – the arrangement of flowers and shrubs and a variety of plants. Colour is important too.”

Besides the Special cup there are also eight area competitions, plus titles of Best Horticultural Enterprise for people who grow their own produce, Best School Garden, Best Container Display and Best Community Garden.

The contest aims to recognise the special efforts some tenants make to keep their own urban Edens looking their best.

Special cup entrant Janis Coles, from Clifton, said: “When I first came here there was nothing in the garden, and I’ve been here eight years this year – and I’ve sometimes been spending six or seven hours a day in it.

“It’d be lovely to win it – I didn’t think I’d get this far.”
