‘Eco-Expressway’ roadworks lead to rush hour chaos around Lady Bay Bridge

Motorists around Lady Bay Bridge and Trent Bridge faced delays of up to an hour on Monday due to roadworks on Daleside Road.

Traffic built up across Lady Bay Bridge, along Meadow Lane, Radcliffe Road, the A60 Loughborough Road, and even back to the A52 westbound approaching Gamston.

A lane closure on Daleside Road in Colwick, close to a KFC outlet, appeared to be the cause of the delays.

The work is part of improvements carried out in preparation for Nottingham’s ‘Eco-Expressway’, creating extra bus and cycle lanes.

NCT and Trent Barton warned of long queues and delays to bus services and some drivers said their journey times increased by almost an hour.

A worker at BOC Gases on Holme Street said: “We had trouble getting into work and we’ve had customers phone and say they’ve had trouble getting in to see us.”

Paul Smith from The Cheesecake Shop on Poulton Drive added: “The disruption is to do with the new Eco Expressway they are building.

“Phase one is from the roundabout on Daleside Road up to the race course, I’m not sure how long it is going to take them.”

Work on phase one of the scheme began in October and 5km of new priority bus lanes will be created, along with cycle routes.

A spokesman for Nottingham City Council said: “ Eco Expressway works have been in place since the beginning of October with minimal impact to road users, however we would like to apologise to motorists for delays over the weekend and on Monday morning at the Daleside Road/ Manvers Street roundabout.

“This was due to a problem with the signal equipment at this junction which has now been resolved.

“From late Tuesday afternoon, some lane restrictions through the roundabout will be lifted which will further improve traffic flow. The first phase of this project continues until March next year and there may be occasions when journey times are affected along this route.

“For most of its length, the Eco Expressway will be an extra lane which will not affect the number of lanes for other traffic.

“However, towards the end of next year we will be trialling a lane reduction along Daleside Road between Manvers Street and Trent Lane to provide a bus lane for the Eco Expressway.”
