Royal Concert Hall set for multimillion pound revamp

They’re well-known for famous faces, performances and family fun – but after nearly thirty years, the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall are ready for a facelift.

After a successful bid for funding from Arts Council England the Royal Centre will benefit from a £1.5m grant to improve its facilities.

The money will go towards a two-year project costing a total of £3.3m, with Nottingham City Council already pledging £1.8m to fund the works.

Upgrades can now start after Arts Council England confirmed its share of the funding on Tuesday.

The ‘transformation project’ will see entrances remodelled, the installation of improved disability access and an area to dine and drink at the café outside.

This is a major boost to our plans

Managing director Robert Sanderson said: “This project aims to add to that success by securing sustainability for the future. The Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall is already a lively, enjoyable space but we want to extend that throughout the day, from breakfast time through to midnight.

“Everybody should have the opportunity to use and enjoy this wonderful building, situated here right at the heart of our city.”

Phase one of the work will be completed in summer and autumn this year, with work continuing in 2017. Both theatre venues to stay open throughout the development.

Cllr Dave Trimble, Head of Leisure and Culture at Nottingham City Council said: “This very substantial grant by Arts Council England is a major boost to our plans to develop the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall and to improve its facilities and visitor numbers, particularly during the day.”
