A transgender prisoner originally from Nottingham has been found dead in her cell at HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes.

Joanne Latham, 38, was sentenced to life imprisonment back in 2001 under the name of Edward Latham after attempting to murder a flatmate.

As with all deaths in custody, there will be an investigation

She was found unresponsive in her cell at the all-male prison in Buckinghamshire on Friday morning.

Paramedics arrived at about 5.40am and attempts to resuscitate her were halted 20 minutes later.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “HMP Woodhill prisoner Joanne Latham was found unresponsive on the morning of Friday 27 November.

“Staff and paramedics attempted resuscitation, but she was pronounced dead at 6.20am.

“As with all deaths in custody, there will be an investigation by the independent Prisons and Probations Ombudsman.”

Ms Latham had previously spent time in Rampton secure hospital, a high security psychiatric hospital near Retford in Bassetlaw.

While in custody, she had received further life sentences for the attempted murders of a HMP Frankland prisoner and a fellow patient at Rampton secure hospital in 2011.

It is believed she changed her name to Joanne earlier this year.

Hers is the second transgender prison death in recent weeks after Vicky Thompson was found dead two weeks ago at Armley Jail.
