Nearly 1,000 pupils miss out on first choice of Notts secondary school

Almost 1,000 pupils have missed out on their first choice of secondary school across Notts.

Parents were finding out yesterday whether their children will be going to their preferred schools on what is known as ‘national offer day’.

Across the county, nearly 500 children missed out on a first choice spot, while in Nottingham city, another 498 didn’t get their preferred school.

However in the city the figures mean more than eight out of ten children still did get their first choice – a total 83.5 per cent – down slightly from 84.4 per cent last year.

And Nottinghamshire County Council offered 93.8 per cent of children their first place – 7,509 students out of a total of 8,007.

We’re working hard to meet growing demand

Sarah Fielding, director of education in Nottingham, said: “I’m pleased that almost 92 per cent of children got their first or second choice of secondary school this year.

“We’re working hard in Nottingham to make sure we have the right number of primary and secondary school places to meet growing demand.”

The county council’s committee chairman for children and young people’s services, Councillor John Peck, said: “We’ve done a lot of work over this past year encouraging parents to use all four of their preferences on the application form rather than only making one preference and thereby limiting their options.

“And as a result, we have seen an increase in parents making more than one preference.”
