A Nottinghamshire MP says he hopes the Chilcot Report will lead to Tony Blair admitting an ‘awful misjudgement’ in leading the country to war in Iraq.

The Iraq War inquiry is delivering its findings today in a long-awaited document dubbed the Chilcot Report.

It has been looking into the run-up to US-led 2003 invasion of Iraq and its aftermath.

Sir John Chilcot said the document’s main findings were that the UK joined the invasion “before peaceful options for disarmament exhausted” – and military action was “not a last resort”.

He said: “The judgements about the severity of the threat posed by Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction – WMD – were presented with a certainty that was not justified.”

Nottingham North MP Graham Allen, who voted against the war, says he now hopes former Prime Minister Tony Blair will admit fault.

He tweeted: “Today Tony Blair can help himself, our party and the world heal by admitting the awful misjudgement which released a global religious war.

“The Iraq war vote produced the largest ever rebellion within a governing party, a fault line that Tony Blair can start to heal today if he chooses.”

Mr Blair has always defended the motives for joining the US-led invasion.

The report was published this morning and Parliament will discuss its findings later.

Hundreds of thousands of people died or were injured in the war, including 179 Britons who died.

Iraqi president and dictator Saddam Hussain was removed from power and later executed, but widespread conflict and instability have blighted the region in the 13 years since.
