More than 1,000 tons of hay are on a fire at a Nottinghamshire farm, causing a huge plume of smoke.

The huge blaze began at 11.39pm on Wednesday night in a field by the A6097 at Oxton.

Eight crews from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene but the fire is expected to burn for days because of its size.

The Oxton Bypass is shut close to the village as crews are using a fire hydrant on the route to fight the fire.

“We currently have three appliances in attendance now, as well as our welfare unit from Stapleford, and we are using hose reel jets and ground monitors to stop the fire spreading to the nearby stack,” said Station Manager Craig Holmes, who is currently the incident commander.

“The fire has died down significantly in the last few hours although it’s likely that we will be here for some time yet so we can continue to protect the surrounding area. The next step for us is to liaise with the Environment Agency to look at our strategy going forward.

“I’m also currently liaising with our colleagues from Nottinghamshire Police and Highways and it is hoped that in the next hour or so we will be able to look at re-opening the road.”

“We would like to thank local residents for their patience while we deal with this incident.”
