Half a century of green-fingered expertise wins Notts gardener prestigious medal

Nottinghamshire gardening expert John Stirland has been given a medal to commemorate 50 years of gardening – after his wife put him forward for the award.

John has juggled being a horticulturist and expert alongside other roles, including lecturer, Boots worker and jobs at different farms.

He also features in a gardening segment on Notts TV’s 6:30 Show every Thursday.

they felt I deserved it

Speaking about the award, he said: “You have to be recommended for it; the Royal Horticultural Society is our lead body and my wife put me in for it.

“Then I had to justify getting it, so I did know I was up for it

“I have had a little bit of a here, there and everywhere life so it’s taken a long time to get it right but they said they felt I deserve it.”

John was forn at Villa Farm in Nuthall, Nottinghamshire.
