Long delays again on London Road – because another BT manhole is collapsing

Motorists are again being warned to expect delays on London Road in Nottingham because of a problem with collapsing manholes.

Nottingham City Council says a lane will be closed on the road at the junction with Queen’s Road, near Hooters, until Monday, August 22.

The authority says urgent work is need to replace a BT manhole cover which is weakening in the middle of the road and may fall through completely unless metal plates surrounding it are not strengthened.

There were delays of around ten minutes for motorists heading north into Nottingham during the Monday morning rush-hour.

And the council says other routes are likely to be affected at busy times and urged commuters to try to use a different route.

A city council spokesman said: “These works will affect drivers and commuters on northbound, southbound and westbound routes around the city centre and train station, so please consider using an alternative route or allowing more time for your journey.”

It follows similar problems which led to the closure of a lane on Trent Bridge for 10 days last month – also because of a manhole belonging to BT.
