A 23-year-old man has been given five years after pleading guilty to rape at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday (Wednesday August 2).

Robert Hessey, 23, formerly of Berridge Road East, Forest Fields, approached a 46-year-old woman at a bus stop in Arnold while she was waiting for a taxi to take her the rest of the journey home on Sunday January 3 2016.

Hessey asked to share the taxi with the woman and then invited himself into her house where he then raped her.

The judge sentenced him to five years in prison as well as imposing a restraining order not to approach his victim.

DC Emma Pollard said: “Hessey knew the woman was afraid of him and he abused this as a way of gaining entry into her house.

“There are no excuses for this type of behaviour – there is still a widely perpetrated myth that implicit consent can be given by someone’s actions, such as allowing them into their house.

“This is absolutely unacceptable and, although no sentence could truly reflect the pain Hessey inflicted on this woman, I am pleased with the result.

“I would like to thank her for being so brave throughout this case and I hope this shows how seriously these offences are taken.”

Hessey will remain on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
