Nottingham’s Bestwood and Bulwell food bank saved from closure

A Nottingham food bank has been saved from closure thanks to the help of local businesses.

Bestwood and Bulwell food bank, based at St Phillips church in Top Valley, was in danger of being closed a few months ago and was given ten days notice to move premises.

It was saved by a group of local businesses including building firm J Tomlinson who also provided the charity with a new outdoor warehouse to store their donations.

Manager of the food bank Nigel Webster said that there has been an increase in people who work in low paid jobs and on zero hour contracts coming to get food. There’s also been an increase in families who are struggling to feed their children.

He said: “Until last year we were using a donated premises unfortunately the owner needed to reclaim them and we had quite short notice to get out, just ten day, but thankfully we have had tremendous help from the local community and from local businesses.

“Tomlinson came forward and helped us along with some young people from the national assistance service and we were able to site a storage container next to the church which has meant we were able to keep going and keep serving local people.”

The food bank feeds around 3000 people a year, forty per cent of them children.

Donations can be brought to the St Phillips church on Knights Close, Top Valley Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
