Notts Police say uniformed officers will provide a ‘visible presence’ in the city’s gay clubs and pubs over the weekend.

Senior officers are planning visits to provide reassurance after the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida on Sunday, which killed 49 people.

However, they stressed the action was not in response to any specific raised threat to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community in the city.

Chief Inspector Shaun Ostle said: “I can well appreciate that some members of the LGBT community may now feel vulnerable in light of the shootings and wanted to offer my reassurance.

“I have asked that my officers visit the local known LGBT licensed premises over the weekend to provide that visible presence.

“I must stress, however, that there is absolutely no information to say that there is any raised risk to Nottingham.”

Gay venues in the city include Propaganda on Broadway, the New Foresters on St Ann’s Street, and Downtown 64 on Wilford Street.

A candlelit vigil was held in Nottingham city centre on Monday evening to remember those killed in the massacre.

Around 200 people gathered at the Brian Clough statue near Old Market Square to pay their respects, and several speakers, including vigil organiser Maryam Din, relayed messages of support to the LGBT community.

The gunman involved in the killings has been identified as 29-year-old Omar Mateen, a US citizen who is reported to have pledged allegiance to Islamic State. He was killed during a gunfight with police at the time of the incident.

Anyone with any concerns is asked to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101.
