Newark and Sherwood District Councillor Tony Roberts said: “To have a member of the Royal Family here is so important to the project and the town. It puts the final seal of approval on us.”

The prince got the chance to play with interactive history films made for the centre by Nottingham company Spool.

He then headed to the Theatre Royal in the city, where he helped staff, actors and fans celebrate the venue’s 150th birthday.

He also watched a stage production of ‘Hood’, a new collection of tales based on the life of the famous outlaw.
